Job Description

The College of Education and Human Development at the University of Nevada, Reno (R1) invites applications for a tenure-track, full-time Assistant Professor in Secondary Education beginning July 1, 2027. The Assistant Professor will have summer teaching opportunities available.

We seek a scholar with a critical research agenda in teaching and learning, teacher preparation, and STEM-related educational contexts such as mathematics education and/or computer science education. We are particularly interested in candidates whose scholarship is grounded in the Learning Sciences and investigates how people learn, how learning environments are designed and studied, and how research on learning can inform educational practice. Areas of interest may include, but are not limited to, learning and cognition; design of learning environments; technology-enhanced learning; artificial intelligence and emerging technologies in education; collaborative or informal learning; learning analytics; teacher learning; equitable and culturally responsive learning environments; or related areas.

The successful candidate’s work should connect learning sciences scholarship to one or more areas of strategic importance to the College, including mathematics education, computer science education, STEM education, secondary education, teacher education, or the design and study of innovative learning environments. Candidates whose research crosses disciplinary boundaries and creates opportunities for collaboration across education, STEM disciplines, computing, and other university units are especially encouraged to apply.

The faculty will engage in an active, focused research program that results in publications and funded grants and contributes to the profession, university, and community service and outreach. The University’s Office of Research and Innovation supports faculty in conducting research, scholarly, and creative activity.

The faculty will teach courses in Secondary Education and other areas related to teacher preparation, such as courses in learning theory, mathematics education, integrated STEM, and/or general education courses. Teaching responsibilities include advisement of Master’s students in the Secondary First-Time Licensure programs. There are opportunities to advise and mentor doctoral students in STEM Education and Curriculum and Instruction. Candidates should demonstrate ability to connect research, pedagogy, and teacher development at the undergraduate and graduate level.

Required Qualifications

An earned doctorate by July 1, 2027, in Learning Sciences, Educational Psychology, Mathematics Education, STEM Education, Curriculum and Instruction, Teacher Education, or a related field.

At least three years of K-12 teaching experience or equivalent.

Ability to teach undergraduate- and graduate-level courses in teacher preparation.

Demonstrated excellence or potential for excellence in research and grant acquisition.

Preferred Qualifications

-
An externally fundable research agenda in learning environments, mathematics education, STEM education, and/or computer science education.

Experience in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses related to teacher education in secondary education and clinical settings.

-
Experience in teaching asynchronous and synchronous online courses.

-
Experience in working with populations from diverse backgrounds in secondary education.

Experience or interest in building researcher-practitioner partnerships with schools and communities.

Compensation Grade

Assistant Professor ($80,000 - $85,000)
