THE ROLE

We are looking for a Senior Legal Counsel, Product to serve as one of the primary legal partners for TRM's Product and Engineering organizations. You will advise on the legal implications of product decisions from conception through launch — with a particular focus on how TRM collects, uses, and delivers blockchain data, and how it builds AI-powered features on top of it.

This is a high-autonomy, high-impact role that sits at the intersection of legal, product, and business strategy. You will report into the Assistant General Counsel and be embedded in the product development lifecycle — sitting in roadmap reviews, spec discussions, and launch-readiness processes, and working directly with Product Managers, Engineers, Data Scientists, and GTM teams. You are expected to operate independently, exercise sound judgment under ambiguity, and translate legal requirements into practical guidance that teams can actually execute.

TRM's products process sensitive data across dozens of jurisdictions on behalf of governments, financial institutions, and crypto businesses. The product legal questions we face — around data sourcing, AI/ML, intellectual property, and novel regulatory frameworks — are novel, high-stakes, and consequential. This role is for a senior lawyer who thrives in that environment.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

• Serve as legal partner to Product and Engineering, advising on the legal implications of product decisions from conception through launch across TRM's product portfolio.

• Advise our Blockchain Intelligence and Data teams on data collection methods and practices, data sourcing and licensing, and the permissible use of first- and third-party data.

• Counsel on the development and deployment of AI/ML features — including model training, data inputs and outputs, transparency, and emerging AI regulatory requirements.

• Advise on intellectual property matters relevant to the product, including ownership, licensing, and open-source use.

• Draft and refine product-facing legal terms, including terms of service, acceptable use policies, data terms, and customer-facing product documentation.

• Partner closely with Privacy Counsel on the privacy and data-protection implications of product specs, technical architectures, and data flows, with an eye toward legal risk, data minimization, and regulatory compliance.

• Identify legal and regulatory risks in proposed product features and recommend practical mitigations that preserve product momentum.

• Build scalable legal frameworks, playbooks, and self-service resources so Product and Engineering teams can move quickly with legal clarity.

• Collaborate with other members of the Legal team on regulatory matters, commercial agreements, and special projects as needed.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

• J.D. from an accredited U.S. law school and active bar membership in good standing of at least one U.S. state bar.

• 6–8 years of legal experience at a reputable law firm and/or in-house at a technology company, with a substantial focus on product counseling.

• Demonstrated experience advising Product and Engineering teams throughout the product development lifecycle, ideally for data-intensive or AI-powered products.

• Working knowledge of the legal issues that shape technology products — data use and licensing, intellectual property, AI/ML, consumer-facing terms, and how privacy frameworks (e.g., GDPR, CCPA/CPRA) intersect with product decisions.

• Strong commercial instincts — you understand the business context behind legal questions and give advice that helps teams make decisions, not avoid them.

• Comfort operating in ambiguous, cross-jurisdictional environments where the right answer isn't always obvious, and the ability to manage multiple priorities and tight deadlines with minimal supervision.

• Clear, direct communicator who can translate legal complexity for non-lawyer stakeholders, with the executive presence to engage senior stakeholders, external partners, and outside counsel.

• Comfort with AI tooling and integrating it into legal workflows.

• Experience advising companies that serve government or financial institution customers is a plus. Familiarity with blockchain, cryptocurrency, or fintech is a plus but not required.

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE

In your first 90 days, you will have a firm command of TRM's product portfolio, data flows, and existing legal posture, and will have built relationships with Product and Engineering leads and begun showing up proactively in product development conversations. Within six months, you will be the trusted, go-to legal partner for the product organization — having stood up scalable frameworks that let teams move quickly with legal clarity, and established yourself as a practical, commercially-minded partner across the company.
