Description of Work

The Office of the Governor is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Executive Director to oversee both the operations and events of the Executive Mansion.
The Executive Director of the North Carolina Governor’s Mansion provides executive leadership and operational oversight for the Governor’s Mansion, staff, programs, events, and public-facing activities. The Executive Director is responsible for ensuring that the Executive Mansion operates with the highest standards of hospitality, professionalism, discretion, security awareness, historic preservation and fiscal stewardship.
Serving as a key member of the Governor’s Operations Team, the Executive Director works closely with the Governor, First Family, senior leadership team, state agencies, legislators, community leaders, donors, and other stakeholders. The position requires exceptional judgment, diplomacy, organizational leadership, and the ability to manage sensitive and high-profile matters with confidentiality and professionalism.
The Executive Director oversees the Executive Mansion as both a private residence and an important symbol of the State, ensuring that its historic character, public responsibilities, and ceremonial functions are maintained to the highest standards.
Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Providing strategic leadership and day-to-day executive oversight of Mansion operations.
- Establishing and maintaining policies, procedures, standards, and protocols for Mansion operations and events.
- Serving as the principal administrative liaison among the Governor’s Office, Mansion staff, state agencies, contractors, vendors, and external stakeholders.
- Advising the Governor and First Family on Mansion operations, hospitality, events, protocol, and related matters.
- Exercising sound judgment in handling confidential, sensitive, and time-critical matters.
- Developing and managing operating budgets, expenditures, contracts, purchasing, and financial controls.
- Ensuring compliance with applicable state laws, policies, regulations, and administrative requirements.

Recruitment Range: $60,881.00 - $106,544.00

- Experience coordinating projects, meetings, events, or programs involving multiple departments, agencies, or external stakeholders as well as the demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and meet established deadlines.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse range of individuals and organizations.
Position/Physical Requirements
- Typical work schedule is 40 hours a week, which will include evening events. The schedule will vary – some weeks may follow typical office hours; others may include evening events with more flexibility during the day.

Minimum Education and Experience

The Office of the Governor helps the Governor carry out his duties. The Governor serves a term of four years and chairs the collective body of the state's elected executive officials, the Council of State. The Governor's powers and responsibilities are prescribed by the state constitution and by law. They serve as North Carolina's chief executive and are tasked by the constitution with faithfully carrying out the laws of the state. They are ex officio commander in chief of the North Carolina National Guard and director of the state budget. The office has some powers of appointment of executive branch officials, some judges, and members of boards and commissions. Governors are also empowered to grant pardons and veto legislation. With its inception in 1776, the office of Governor is the oldest public office in the state of North Carolina.
