Toronto, ON, CanadaPosted Oct 21

WHO WE ARE

Opened in 1914 and welcoming over 1.3 million visitors annually, the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) is Canada's most-visited museum, ranking among the top 10 cultural institutions in North America. At ROM, we are dedicated to building and sharing global collections, sharing knowledge, inspiring learning, and fostering community engagement. As a globally recognized field research institute, ROM houses an impressive collection of over 18 million artworks, cultural objects, and natural history specimens, showcased in over 40 galleries and exhibition spaces. We are committed to creating a space where art, culture, and nature intersect, connecting people and communities to the past, present and shared future.

As we continue to work toward our goals to transform and evolve as one of the world’s foremost 21st-century museums, we seek passionate and dynamic team members who embody our mission and values.

WHO WE NEED

We are seeking a skilled and dependable Maintenance Mechanic 1 to support the safe and reliable operation of ROM's mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, and building systems during overnight, weekend, and statutory-holiday hours.

Reporting to the Manager, Maintenance & Facility Operations, you will work as part of a two-person overnight team alongside a shift Operating Engineer. As a second credentialed operator, you will support the operation and maintenance of ROM's TSSA-regulated boiler and refrigeration plant while providing hands-on troubleshooting, maintenance, and emergency response across the Museum's facilities.

This role is essential to protecting ROM's collections, building infrastructure, and occupants during hours when fewer staff are onsite. You will respond to mechanical faults, monitor environmental conditions, complete preventive maintenance, and take immediate action to contain issues that could affect museum operations.

The ideal candidate brings strong technical expertise across building systems, sound independent judgment, and the ability to respond calmly and effectively to unexpected challenges in a complex institutional environment.

HOW YOU WILL MAKE AN IMPACT

  • Perform skilled maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs across mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, and general building systems, including minor electrical work within the scope of your qualifications.
  • Support the safe operation, daily inspections, and testing of ROM's boiler and refrigeration plant alongside the shift Operating Engineer, following established maintenance programs and TSSA requirements.
  • Respond to mechanical breakdowns, leaks, alarms, and building emergencies, taking immediate action to isolate, contain, and repair faults while escalating significant concerns as appropriate.
  • Monitor temperature, relative humidity, and building system performance in galleries and collections storage areas, responding to environmental changes that could put collections at risk.
  • Conduct regular inspections of mechanical rooms, plant facilities, galleries, and public spaces to identify potential hazards, equipment faults, and emerging maintenance needs.
  • Complete preventive and corrective maintenance work orders, maintaining accurate records, equipment information, and shift-handover documentation through ROM's computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
  • Provide technical and operational support for overnight events, film shoots, and after-hours programming, collaborating with Security and other ROM teams as needed.
  • Support monitoring, maintenance, and emergency call-outs at ROM's off-site storage facilities in Etobicoke and Oakville when required.
  • Follow established health and safety procedures, including lockout/tagout, confined-space entry, and working-at-heights requirements, while coordinating with overnight, incoming, and daytime maintenance teams to maintain continuous building operations.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Valid Ontario Fourth-Class Operating Engineer Certificate of Qualification (or higher) issued under O. Reg. 219/01 (Operating Engineers) is considered an asset.
  • A relevant skilled-trade Certificate of Qualification, such as Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic (313A/313D), Plumber (306A), Industrial Electrician (442A), or Industrial Mechanic Millwright (433A), is strongly preferred.
  • BES (Building Environmental Systems, Class I/II), Ontario 4th class certification, or an equivalent combination of relevant education, training, and experience.
  • A minimum of three to five (3–5) years of skilled experience maintaining and repairing mechanical and building systems in a commercial, institutional, or similarly complex environment.
  • Strong hands-on knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical systems, including familiarity with building automation systems (BAS), controls, and troubleshooting techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose and resolve mechanical problems independently, exercise sound judgment under pressure, and respond effectively to urgent operational situations.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and record-keeping skills, including comfort using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and documenting maintenance activities.
  • Valid WHMIS, Standard First Aid/CPR, and Working at Heights certification, or the ability to obtain these before starting. Gas Technician (G2/G3) and Ozone Depletion Prevention (ODP) certifications are assets.
  • Experience working in a museum, heritage facility, healthcare institution, or another environment requiring careful control of building conditions and protection of sensitive assets is an asset.
