Role overview

CarGurus is hiring an Engineering Manager to lead the Autolist team within our Consumer Engineering organization.

CarGurus is reimagining the automotive shopping experience for consumers, and the Autolist team is helping millions of shoppers find their next car. Our team owns critical parts of the journey from the moment a shopper begins researching a vehicle through discovery, evaluation, and purchase. Autolist operates as a distinct marketplace brand and subsidiary of CarGurus. In this role, you will lead a team of engineers building consumer experiences that help people find and get a vehicle they love.

This is a high-impact leadership opportunity at an exciting moment. We are evolving our engineering practices toward AI-enabled and increasingly agentic ways of working, and this manager will help translate that evolution into how the team designs, builds, tests, and operates software. You will shape technical direction, grow engineers, partner closely with Product, UX, and Analytics, and help deliver experiences used by millions of automotive shoppers.

About the role

As Engineering Manager, you will lead a talented, collaborative team responsible for important parts of the Autolist consumer experience, including its mobile apps and platform. You will combine technical judgment, product thinking, and people leadership to help the team deliver high-quality software and continuously improve how it works.

You will work across the stack and across disciplines. The ideal candidate is a strong engineering generalist who can engage in architecture and system design, understand the needs of consumer applications, and create the clarity and focus required to move complex initiatives from concept to measurable outcomes.

Mobile-app experience is a strong plus, particularly experience leading teams that build customer-centric mobile products. You do not need experience with both iOS and Android, and we are open to candidates whose mobile experience is grounded in one platform or in close partnership with mobile teams. We value the ability to reason about consumer app experiences and platform choices as the product evolves, including the potential for more platform-agnostic approaches over time.

What you’ll do

  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of software engineers; support technical development, career growth, performance, and a collaborative, high-performing culture.
  • Set technical direction for the team, balancing near-term delivery with investments in architecture, reliability, scalability, and developer effectiveness.
  • Lead cross-functional collaboration across engineering, Product, UX, and Analytics through ideation, technical development, experimentation, and launch; establish shared vision by
  • building consensus on strategy, priorities, and execution.
  • Help the team build intuitive, high-quality, customer-centric mobile and web products that add value and improve the Autolist consumer shopping experience.
  • Drive disciplined execution in a fast-moving environment by clarifying goals, decomposing complex initiatives, managing scope and dependencies, and creating a bias toward incremental delivery and learning.
  • Champion AI-enabled ways of working, including effective use of AI coding assistants, agentic workflows, and AI-driven engineering tools. Model these practices while helping the team adopt them thoughtfully and responsibly.
  • Collaborate across Consumer, Dealer, and Platform Engineering to align on dependencies, integration requirements, and shared technical investments.
  • Work closely with Product Analytics to define and analyze metrics that measure product success, using data, customer feedback, A/B tests, and operational signals to guide decisions.
  • Partner with Product, UX, and Analytics to incorporate usability research, customer insights, and market analysis into technical requirements and product decisions.
  • Advocate for engineering excellence through strong code quality, observability, system reliability, security, testing, and continuous improvement in process and tooling.
  • Roll up your sleeves when it will have the greatest impact—whether that means contributing to a technical design, helping scope an experiment, resolving a cross-team dependency, or unblocking delivery.

What you’ll bring

  • 7+ years of relevant software engineering experience, including 3+ years as an engineering manager, technical lead, or equivalent engineering leadership role.
  • Experience leading and developing engineers who build and operate customer-facing software.
  • A generalist engineering background with enough technical depth to engage in architecture, system design, APIs, distributed systems, data, testing, observability, and technical trade-offs.
  • Experience delivering consumer-facing products at scale, with a strong customer focus and a track record of shipping high-quality, user-centered experiences.
  • Experience with mobile applications or close partnership with mobile engineering teams; familiarity with iOS and/or Android platform design principles is a strong plus, but experience with both is not required.
  • Strong product judgment, quantitative and analytical problem-solving skills, and comfort using analytics, experimentation, and customer insights to make decisions and measure impact.
  • Genuine enthusiasm for AI-enabled and agentic development, with the curiosity and leadership to help engineers adopt new tools and ways of working.
  • An ownership mindset and strong project and execution management skills; able to drive product and engineering development from concept to launch, create clarity, prioritize effectively, and make steady progress in ambiguous environments.
  • A demonstrated ability to coach engineers and help them grow technically and professionally.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to build trust across engineering, product, design, analytics, and partner teams.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Curiosity, empathy, sound judgment, and a commitment to building inclusive teams and continuously improving.
