Professionals Support and Engagement Adviser
About the Team
The Professional Support and Engagement Team plays a vital role in ensuring that registrants engaging with the NMC's fitness to practise process are supported fairly, compassionately and effectively.
We provide specialist advice to colleagues across Fitness to Practise, helping them understand and respond to the individual needs of registrants who may face barriers to engagement. This includes advising on reasonable adjustments, accessibility, wellbeing considerations and approaches that support meaningful participation in our processes.
Alongside our advisory work, we lead and contribute to service improvement initiatives that help make our processes more equitable, inclusive and person-centred. We work closely with colleagues across the organisation to increase awareness of individual differences, promote fair outcomes and help embed best practice across Fitness to Practise.
We're a collaborative and values-driven team that believes regulation can be both effective and compassionate. Our work is challenging, influential and highly rewarding, with a direct impact on people's experiences of the NMC.
Your Role and Impact
As a Professional Support & Engagement Adviser, you'll help ensure that individuals facing complex circumstances are able to engage as fully and fairly as possible with our regulatory processes.
This is not a traditional case management role. Instead, you'll act as a specialist adviser, drawing on your professional knowledge, experience and judgement to support colleagues in identifying barriers to engagement and considering appropriate adjustments, accommodations and support options.
You'll work with complex situations where there is rarely a straightforward answer. Success requires balancing individual needs with regulatory requirements, exercising sound judgement and influencing others to consider different perspectives.
In this role, you will:
- Provide specialist advice and guidance to Fitness to Practise colleagues on supporting registrants with complex needs and barriers to engagement.
- Assess information and identify factors that may affect a registrant’s ability to participate effectively in NMC processes.
- Recommend reasonable adjustments, supportive accommodations and engagement approaches tailored to individual circumstances.
- Support colleagues to make informed decisions that balance fairness, individual needs and regulatory responsibilities.
- Build strong relationships with stakeholders across the organisation to promote best practice and improve outcomes.
- Contribute to projects, pilots and improvement initiatives that enhance the support available to registrants.
- Promote person-centred, trauma-informed and inclusive approaches across Fitness to Practise.
- Work collaboratively with safeguarding, wellbeing and other specialist teams where escalation or additional expertise is required.
- Contribute to the development of guidance, resources and awareness activities that strengthen organisational capability.
This is an exciting opportunity to influence meaningful change and help shape how the NMC supports people through some of the most challenging periods of their professional lives.
What You Will Bring
We're looking for someone who combines professional expertise with empathy, sound judgement and a genuine commitment to improving people's experiences.
You may come from healthcare, nursing, social work, therapy, safeguarding, wellbeing, advocacy, professional regulation or another environment supporting individuals with complex needs.
You’ll bring:
- Experience supporting individuals with complex needs, vulnerabilities, health conditions or barriers to engagement.
- Experience providing advice, guidance or recommendations in situations requiring professional judgement and risk assessment.
- Experience working within multidisciplinary environments and building effective relationships with a range of stakeholders.
- Strong communication and influencing skills, with the ability to navigate sensitive or challenging conversations confidently and compassionately.
- Excellent judgement and problem-solving skills, with the ability to balance individual needs, organisational requirements and competing priorities.
- Ability to work autonomously, analyse complex information and make well-reasoned recommendations.
Most importantly, you'll be motivated by helping people navigate complex situations and passionate about making a meaningful difference to the experiences of those engaging with the NMC.
