Senior Civil Structural Engineer Transport
Design complex structures. Solve real engineering challenges. Make an impact.
At AECOM, we're delivering infrastructure that creates opportunity for everyone. We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Civil Structural Engineer to join our Wellington team. This role offers a unique combination of major project delivery experience and broader consulting exposure. You will contribute to a variety of AECOM's transport, water, power and infrastructure projects across the Australia and New Zealand, and locally in the Wellington region, including aspects of project and contract management.
Why this role?
Few engineers have the opportunity to work on projects that genuinely shape the future of our built environment. At AECOM we are delivering significant transport improvements, enhanced flood resilience, better community connections and long-term benefits for the people and the environment.
As a Senior Civil Structural Engineer, you'll apply your engineering expertise, working alongside experienced construction, design and client teams to help solve real-world engineering problems and deliver critical infrastructure for current and future generations. You'll work across a diverse range of structures, from bridges, foundations and retaining walls to water infrastructure, industrial facilities and buildings, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality engineering solutions.
The Opportunity
As a Senior Civil Structural Engineer, you'll be working with project managers and technical leads while taking ownership of structural design from concept through to detailed design, while providing technical guidance and supporting successful project delivery.
You'll:
- Design civil and structural infrastructure, including bridges, abutments, foundations, retaining walls and underground structures.
- Deliver structural designs for water-retaining facilities, including reservoirs, tanks, manholes and wet wells.
- Work across building, industrial and ancillary structures, including substations, pipe racks, platforms and equipment foundations.
- Lead a package of works to deliver structural design to expected quality of desirables and agreed milestones.
- Apply your expertise in concrete, steel, masonry and timber design.
- Prepare and review structural calculations, design reports, drawings and technical specifications.
- Lead design reviews and quality assurance, ensuring deliverables meet technical, programme and budget requirements.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop practical, coordinated engineering solutions.
- Contribute to proposals, project planning, engineering budgets and delivery schedules.
- Support site inspections, including reviewing ITPs, attending pre-pour inspections and assessing structural works against approved designs.
- Work with site and design teams to resolve construction issues and coordinate design changes.
- Mentor junior engineers, share technical knowledge and support the development of the wider team.
Build strong client relationships and represent AECOM at stakeholder meetings and relevant industry events.
The impact you’ll bring
We're looking for a technically strong engineer who enjoys solving complex structural challenges, takes ownership of their work and can confidently collaborate across design and construction teams.
You'll ideally bring:
- A Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
- Strong experience in civil and structural engineering design, from concept through to detailed design.
- Demonstrated technical leadership delivering packages of structural design.
- Minium 10 years experience designing a range of structures, such as foundations, retaining walls, bridges, water-retaining structures or buildings.
- Proficiency in structural design software such as SAP2000, ETABS, MIDAS or SpaceGass.
- A sound understanding of structural design principles and materials, including concrete, steel, masonry and timber.
- Experience preparing technical calculations, reports, drawings and specifications.
- Strong technical judgement, attention to detail and commitment to engineering quality.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to build effective relationships with clients and multidisciplinary teams.
- Experience guiding junior engineers and coordinating technical deliverables.
- A commitment to health, safety, professional development and continuous improvement.
- Ideally working towards achieving his CPEng or similar international engineering registration.
We'd particularly value experience across complex civil infrastructure, water-retaining structures or industrial facilities, alongside involvement in site inspections and construction support.
