Job Description:
About bp/team
bp technology is the central organization for all software and platform development. We build all the technology that powers bp’s businesses, from upstream energy production to downstream energy delivery to our customers. We have a variety of teams depending on your areas of interest, including infrastructure and backend services through to customer-facing web and native applications. We encourage our teams to adapt quickly by using native AWS and Azure services, including serverless, and enable them to pick the best technology for a given problem. This is meant to empower our software and platform engineers while allowing them to learn and develop themselves.
Role Purpose
The Senior Software Engineer is a hands-on technical leader responsible for designing, building, testing, deploying and operating high-quality digital platform capabilities across the Corporate Affairs portfolio. The role leads the resolution of sophisticated and ambiguous engineering problems and ensures solutions deliver measurable business value while remaining secure, scalable, maintainable and easy to operate.
Working with Technical Delivery Leads, Product Managers, architects, engineers, QA, operations and suppliers, the role shapes technical direction for the immediate team, leads medium-to-large engineering initiatives and sets a strong standard for code, design and implementation. It combines direct production-grade coding with technical leadership, mentoring and long-term stewardship of the platform architecture.
Scope & Scale
Platform focus
Supports Corporate Affairs digital platforms and services, including DCP, Brand Portal, global web, content, campaign, analytics, integration and operational support capabilities.
Technical leadership
Acts as a technical leader for the immediate engineering team, shaping design decisions and coordinating delivery across multiple engineers.
Engineering scope
Leads sophisticated front-end, back-end, API, integration, automation, cloud and DevOps work according to platform needs.
Delivery ownership
Leads medium-to-large engineering initiatives from technical discovery and design through build, testing, release and production operation.
Capability building
Mentors engineers, raises engineering standards and enables colleagues and partner teams to contribute effectively to shared solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Solution Design
- Lead the end-to-end technical design and implementation of sophisticated digital platform capabilities and services.
- Turn ambiguous business and technical problems into pragmatic, scalable and supportable engineering solutions.
- Decompose larger solutions into clear workstreams and coordinate delivery across multiple engineers and dependencies.
- Make informed trade-offs across business value, delivery pace, technical quality, security and long-term sustainability.
- Lead and contribute to design reviews, technical spikes, solution options and engineering decisions.
- Influence partner teams where direct or indirect technical dependencies affect delivery or platform outcomes.
Hands-on Software Engineering
- Write high-quality, production-grade code that sets the standard for maintainability, scalability, extensibility and clarity.
- Design, build and maintain components, services, APIs, integrations, automation and shared engineering patterns.
- Promote reuse over reinvention and simplify systems to make them easier to enhance and operate over time.
- Perform high-quality code reviews and provide practical feedback on design, testing, security and implementation.
- Diagnose and resolve complex defects and technical issues across application, integration and platform layers.
Agile Delivery & Product Contribution
- Work with Product Managers and Technical Delivery Leads to connect business priorities with technical outcomes.
- Contribute to roadmap shaping, backlog refinement, estimation, sprint planning, demos and retrospectives.
- Define technical tasks, acceptance considerations, dependencies and non-functional requirements.
- Proactively identify architectural issues, technical risks and improvement opportunities that enable faster, higher-quality delivery.
- Communicate technical progress, decisions, risks and trade-offs clearly to technical and non-technical customers.
Quality, DevOps & Operational Excellence
- Establish strong testing practices across unit, integration, component, regression and automated quality controls.
- Improve CI/CD pipelines, release automation, environment management and safe deployment practices.
- Ensure solutions are observable, resilient, secure, accessible, performant and ready for production support.
- Participate in incident response, root-cause analysis and post-incident improvement activities.
- Lead reduction of technical debt, operational toil and recurring failure points through engineering improvements and automation.
Mentoring & Engineering Culture
- Mentor and coach software engineers through pairing, design discussions, code reviews and practical technical guidance.
- Set clear expectations for engineering quality, ownership, documentation and operational responsibility.
- Encourage constructive challenge and help resolve technical disagreements by finding the best path forward.
- Share reusable patterns, lessons and standards across engineering, supplier and partner teams.
- Promote curiosity, inclusion, continuous improvement and a strong product and customer perspective.
Skills & Experience
- Significant experience designing, building and operating digital products, web platforms, APIs, integrations or cloud-native services.
- Strong computer science and software engineering fundamentals, including design, maintainability, testing, security, scalability and performance.
- Experience leading complex engineering initiatives and coordinating work across multiple engineers or technical workstreams.
- Hands-on experience with modern coding practices, version control, automated testing, CI/CD, DevOps and production operations.
- Ability to understand business implications and use them to make sound technical decisions and trade-offs.
- Experience mentoring engineers and raising standards through code review, design review and technical guidance.
- Experience collaborating with product, delivery, architecture, QA, operations, security and supplier teams.
- Desirable experience with Contentful, MACH or headless architecture, modern front-end frameworks, Java or API development, AWS, Azure DevOps, observability, automation or AI-assisted engineering.
Success Measures
- Successful delivery of sophisticated engineering outcomes with measurable business and user impact.
- High-quality, secure and maintainable code that enables other engineers to contribute effectively.
- Sound technical designs and decisions that improve scalability, resilience, operability and delivery speed.
- Reduced technical debt, operational risk and manual effort through simplification, reuse and automation.
- Reliable releases and production services supported by strong testing, observability and operational readiness.
- Improved engineering capability, consistency and confidence across the immediate team.
- Effective collaboration and influence across dependent teams, suppliers and technical customers.
