Accounting Manager
Position Title: Accounting Manager
Location: Remote
Type: Full Time
The Opportunity:
This is a rare opportunity to help build Ohalo's accounting and finance infrastructure and business processes from the ground up, and to be at the forefront of building a best-in-class finance organization. Reporting to the Controller, the Accounting Manager will lead day-to-day accounting operations, develop the Staff Accountant, and own the more technical areas of the close — including stock-based compensation, ASC 842 lease accounting, allocations, and inventory accounting. We're looking for someone who diagnoses the root cause upstream rather than treating symptoms and applying band-aids on the back end.
## Responsibilities:
- Review and approve the work of the Accounting Analyst, including AP processing, cash reconciliations, and journal entries, coaching toward root-cause thinking rather than just correcting the entry
- Prepare and review complex journal entries, including stock-based compensation, ASC 842 lease accounting, and cost/expense allocations
- Design and build Ohalo's inventory and manufacturing accounting process from the ground up: Ohalo is transitioning from an R&D-stage plant breeding company to commercial seed production, so there is no legacy process to inherit
- Design the inventory accounting and costing across the full production chain — from plant material to bioreactor, to greenhouse plugs, to field, to harvesting and processing, to pelletizing and treating seeds, to packaging, storage, and shipment to farmer customers
- Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timely delivery of financial statements
- Prepare and review balance sheet reconciliations and flux analyses, ensuring reconciling items are researched and resolved
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls and accounting policies; serve as a key point of contact for external auditors
- Identify and lead process improvement and automation initiatives — leveraging AI tools and system capabilities (NetSuite, Ramp, Zip, and others) to reduce manual work
- Partner with FP&A and cross-functional teams on accruals, allocations, and reporting needs, and mentor the Accounting Analyst as the team grows
- Own oversight of Ohalo's travel & expense (T&E) program — setting and refining expense policy leveraging Ramp’s AI-tools — and periodically audit transactions and card activity for compliance, coding accuracy, and fraud risk
## Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience
- Strong working knowledge of NetSuite, Ramp, and Zip (or a similar procurement/AP automation platform)
- Deep understanding of US GAAP and technical accounting concepts
- Self-starter and first-principles thinker who is comfortable building process from scratch and digs into root cause rather than symptoms
Preferred Qualifications
- Big 4 or public accounting experience
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
- Experience with manufacturing and/or inventory accounting
- Track record of using AI tools and process automation to change how accounting work gets done
